It is not easy to acquire a nice spruce or fir Christmas tree suitable for home decorating in some parts of the continent, and even when you can, it is always a shame to see it head for the curb after New Year. On the other hand, a synthetic tree, while practical, often lacks soul and character.
Almost everywhere, however, there are large pine trees of one type or another shedding their cones. Diane was inspired to use these cones to create an original and organic Christmas tree, which would survive for many seasons. She began by gathering 5 large brown yard waste bags of nicely formed pine cones. She then created a form using four vegetable cages, mounted on a plywood base. Wheels were added to the base for mobility. The cones were then laboriously hot glued to the frame.
No sooner had Diane finished her first tree than an interior decorator came along and purchased it. It was then back to the yard to collect another five bags of cones. In an earlier iteration of this art form Diane also included a variety of nuts to the construction.
